Svínafellsjökull (Svínafells Glacier) is an outlet glacier in decline, as many glaciers are, where it slides of the larger Glacier of the Lakes.
Following a short gravel road from the R1 you easily come face to face with it´s beauty just as you reach the mountains edge. It's magnificent to view and coming so close you can virtually count the air bubbles in the ice before you.
Blue and white, cracked and broken and now and then you hear the ice break as the crack echoes in the small passage way between the mountains. Surely a nice little off the main road for some leisure time.
