The Neapolitan Camorra and what is today called the Calabrian 'ndrangheta had an early presence in the United States and a number of mainland Italians with roots in these groups joined the American mafia, among them notorious names like Al Capone, Vito Genovese, plus other confirmed and suspected Camorra affiliates who became members and leaders of the Genovese, Chicago, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland Families. We describe the ethnic networks and relationships they preserved for decades as well as their significant influence on American mafia organizations who were traditionally Sicilian. To help understand this, we highlight important details about the Camorra system in both Campania and Calabria, its similarities and differences with Sicilian Cosa Nostra, and specific examples of Camorra groups in the United States plus countless anecdotes relevant to this overlooked element of mafia history.
