Samsung Transparent Smartphone: All You Should Know 2023

It would seem Samsung is developing a transparent smartphone, as the company has patented one such design. This patent surfaced at WIPO, while LetsGoDigital and Guiseppe Spinelli, aka Snoreyn created some renders for everyone to check out.

This patent was published on August 27, though it was filed back in January this year. It explains the technology behind such a device. Interestingly, each pixel on the phone’s display would allow light to pass through it, effectively rendering the screen transparent.

On the display itself, there would be virtual elements over the physical world that you're looking through, allowing for an experience not so different from augmented reality features you'd find by using the camera.
The patent Samsung filed describes how the technology could be used in a regular handset design with a completely opaque screen. In that case, however, you'd be using the camera and viewing the outside world with that component.

Do note that this is just a proxy design, as the final product most possibly won’t look identical, that is if and when it comes to market.

Other brands like LG actually patented something similar some time ago. Xiaomi released a see-through TV quite recently. So, the technology is not novelle. It is already here, and we could see it make a transition to smartphones in the future.

The company would however need to find a way of housing the battery and other components so they do not interfere with the transparent display, or somehow, try to make those elements transparent too.

Samsung, like other major tech companies, is always in search of new ways to implement augmented reality. The same technology Apple said has more applicability and potential than virtual reality. But all of those implementations have depended on regular screen technology. By using a transparent screen, the augmented reality experience could technically be enhanced and potentially allow for more opportunities to utilize it. Even more importantly, it could also pave the way for new smartphone designs.
