Today were going over how to calculate the depth of your fence’s post holes before you start digging. This is one of the more common questions we get, so I thought a little illustrated walk through here on the whiteboard might help folks out. What we are going to do is go through how to calculate your post hole depth. There are 3 elements we need to know in order to calculate our post hole depth. The length of your post, the height of your fence panel and the gap you want to leave between the bottom of your fence and the ground. In our example here, we have an 84in long post, a 48in tall fence panel and we are going to leave a 3in gap between the bottom of the fence and ground. To calculate our post hole depth, we add the height of our fence panel and our gap under the fence together. So in this case, we take 48in + 3in and get 51in. That 51in is how much of your post will be above ground. Now to figure out how much you need to bury below ground, we take the 84in length of our post and subtract the 51in that will be above ground. So in this instance, our post holes will be 33in deep. One thing to keep in mind when digging your post holes is that post hole diggers and augers are rarely precision instruments. Chances are you will over-dig your hole a little and that’s ok. In that instance, you can use some gravel in the hole and tamp it level. That will give you a solid base to put your post on and pour the concrete onto. What you don’t want to do is try to adjust the depth of the post hole with loose dirt. The reason being is that when you pour your concrete in, the loose dirt will compact and give you a different depth.
