Most cotton is made from cellulose and it will damage the shells. The (weak) acidic quality of the cotton is responsible for bleaching the colour of the shell, especially where it touches the shell. It's called Bynes Disease. Especially thin shells and microshells can crumble after a number of years. Therefore best to use synthetic cotton.
