STORYLINE
Silvio Berlusconi promised on Tuesday to have a "streamlined" Cabinet selected by the end of the week that could get to work quickly, resolving Italy's most pressing issues.
He told state TV in a phone interview that his Cabinet will largely be made up of "people who worked for me in the five years of my record-lasting government and who know the problems and the machinery" of the government.
Berlusconi has indicated he plans to bring back as foreign minister Franco Frattini, who has served as EU justice commissioner, and bring back Giulio Tremonti as finance minister.
According to Italian news agency Ansa, Angela Bongiorno, defence lawyer for Giulio Andreotti, is a potential Justice minister, while former showgirl Mara Carfagna might become Minister for Equal Opportunities.
Silvio Berlusconi quickly laid out his strategy on Tuesday for dealing with resolving Italy's problems, from its ailing national airline to garbage piling up in Naples, a day after the media mogul and his rightwing allies triumphed in parliamentary elections.
Bolstered by support from an anti-immigrant party and a former neo-fascist grouping, the 71-year-old Berlusconi emerged from the election with a generous majority in both the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate.
