During today's unveiling of the new R2 SUV, a budding car maker caught everyone off guard by also introducing a tinier crossover model, named the R3. While the R2 already sizes down compared to Rivian's initial SUV, the R1S, the R3 takes the concept of compactness a step further. Rivian's head, RJ Scaringe, mentioned that the R3 is built on a foundation that's five inches shorter in wheelbase compared to the R2. Despite their size difference, both the R2 and R3 are constructed on the same chassis. Additionally, potential buyers will have the option to select from one, two, or three motors for the smaller SUV.
In terms of design, the R3 leans more towards the appearance of a beefed-up hatchback. However, setting it apart from typical hatchbacks, it features a rear glass that opens upwards. Rivian is also preparing a more dynamic variant, the R3X, which can be likened to a compact rally vehicle equipped with a three-motor setup, larger tires, and a slight boost in how high it stands off the ground.
Specific details on the R3 are still under wraps as Rivian has not shared much, but it hinted at a price tag lower than the R2's projected $45,000. The R2 is on track to reach its first customers in the initial months of 2026, implying a bit of a wait for the R3 to hit the roads. As of now, Rivian hasn't started accepting reservations for the R3, and their website section promising more details on the model was inaccessible at the moment.
