SAN ANTONIO - The 1A state final between Ackerly Sands and Robert Lee was a contest for a little more than a quarter when Ben Connell called timeout. Whatever he said should be put on a plaque.
The Mustangs ran off a 29-0 run, forced the Steers into 36 turnovers and, like the previous 3 rounds, ran away from their opponent in the 2nd half in a 60-33 win to win the state title to add to their track title last year.
Elysa Martinez scored 22 points and was the game’s MVP. Landry Morrow added 20 in a game that was not a shooting clinic early. The Mustangs shot just 4-17 in the opening quarter but with the offense struggling, the Mustangs (37-3) used their defense to suffocate the Steers (35-3). 23 1st half turnovers plus the run turned the 2nd half into a victory lap.
While the Steers turned it over 3 dozen times, the Mustangs only turned it over 4 times, 7 for the game, until the backups came in. It was the 4th straight game the Mustangs used their speed, discipline and patience to wear down an opponent, force mistakes, use a big run, and run away.
Lenorah Grady, Gail Borden County, and Garden City had teams from the Crossroads reach the basketball final 4 in the last 10 years but none won it. Sands finally was the 1 to close the deal.
Notes:
Sands beat power Nazareth in the 4th round. This marks the 10th straight year the 1A champion was either Nazareth or the team that beat them in the tournament.
This was the 5th girls basketball state final involving 2 bona fide west Texas teams. Teams in region 1 are 5-0 in such matchups all-time.
