Philomena é uma história verdadeira sobre a procura de uma mãe por seu filho perdido.
Grávida na adolescência em 1952, na Irlanda, Philomena Lee foi enviada ao Convento de Roscrea para ser cuidada, tida como uma mulher em desgraça. Quando seu bebê tinha apenas dias de vida, foi levado pelas freiras para ser adotado por americanos. Philomena passou os cinquenta anos seguintes procurando por ele em vão.
Ela então conhece Martin Sixsmith, jornalista politico que fica intrigado com sua história. Juntos, partem para os Estados Unidos em uma jornada que não só revela a extraordinária estória do filho de Philomena, mas também cria um inesperado laço entre eles.
O filme tem uma interessante narrativa sobre o amor humano e a perda, além de celebrar a vida. É ao mesmo tempo engraçado e triste e diz respeito a duas pessoas muito diferentes, em diferentes fases das suas vidas, que se ajudam e mostram que há espaço para o riso, mesmo nos tempos mais sombrios.
