Last Steam for 2022 through Carlisle
09 & 10 Nov 22
Filmed over two days.
9th November was pretty calm when I visited the station for a couple of hours. Whilst the passenger trains were almost back to normal after the Strike that never happened, the freights were, in some cases, running to strike-day timings.
On 10th November the winds grew stronger through the day with gusts of 40+ mph!
The highlight of the day was the last steam excursion through Carlisle for 2022 when the Worth Valley's 45212 Black 5 hauled the Northern Belle stock around the Cumbrian Coast. Interestingly, with the line closed at Petteril Bridge Junction, which effectively closed London Road Junction too, 45212 ran via what remains of the Carlisle Goods Lines from Upperby Jct via Bog Jct to Caldew Junction on the old M&C in order to turn. I watched this manoeuvre at both St Nicholas Bridge and at Caldew Jct - thanks to Bob for the lift.
As the station was busy and in order to get a good record of the train on the move, I went down to Wigton on the Maryport & Carlisle section of the coast line. I also saw the RHTT, today behind 68s again - it almost caught me out as it took some time to get from Maryport to Wigton.
Then back to Carlisle for a few freights as the light began to fade.
