The South Korean government has ordered Volkswagen to recall over 125,000 vehicles sold in the country after it found that the German automaker had fabricated emissions results.
Announcing an investigation report, Seoul's Ministry of Environment said on Thursday that Volkswagen had faked emmissions results for its Tiguan sports utility vehicles equipped with the EA189 diesel engine by using "defeat device" software. The Tiguan cars in question were imported before September last year, according to the ministry report.
The ministry has ordered Volkswagen to recall all vehicles running on this engine in the country and to provide plans for the recalls by January 6.
The recalls will be comprised of over 125,500 cars of 15 different models including the Volkswagen Beetle, and Audi's Q5, Q3 and A4.
The ministry added that it has fined Volkswagen 14.1 billion won ($12.3 million), also ordering a suspension of unsold Volkswagen and Audi vehicles.
In response, Volkswagen said it respects the South Korean government's investigation results and will take necessary measures.
