Ethnic Studies and Jewish Studies:
Debates Over the California Ethnic Studies Curriculum
Featuring Jeffrey Blutinger, Nolan Cabrera, Marc Dollinger, and Gabi Kirk
Moderated by Sarah Bunin Benor
Several Jewish communal organizations opposed the initial draft of the California ethnic studies model curriculum because of its inclusion of BDS and absence of Jewish Studies. The drafters of the original curriculum now oppose the third draft, which incorporates lessons on Jewish Americans and omits information on Palestinian activism. This topic has been debated in many publications and forums, but there has been little engagement among scholars in Jewish studies and ethnic studies. This panel seeks to address this gap, aiming to discuss the historical and contemporary relationship between ethnic studies and Jewish studies and to model civil discourse on this contentious issue.
