Maye Ni Meriye is an ancient (Punjabi) Dogri folk song originated during the times of undivided Punjab which is now in ‘Jammu’. However, later, when Himachal Pradesh state was created, the song became popular as a Himachali folk song after the words went on to say that,
‘Shimla ni vasna,
Kausauli ni Vasna,
Chamba Kitni Dur.'
This is a song about longing. The song talks about a daughter and a mother. A daughter has a lover in Chamba and she is asking her mother, how far is Chamba from Shimla. She neither wants to stay in Shimla nor in Kasauli but she surely has to go to Chamba to see her love whom she haven't met for a long long time.
Being from the mountains and living far away from home, I feel this beautiful song relates to me in many ways even though it may not portray the exact same meaning of what it is. This song reminds me of my love and dear ones whom I don’t get to see them often in many years.
