(28 Sep 2021) Chinese factories and households are facing rolling power cuts on Tuesday to meet official energy efficiency and pollution targets and to reduce strain on utilities that are being squeezed by high coal prices.
The northeastern city of Shenyang appeared unscathed from the power cuts as key shopping districts remain lit up late into the night.
"A few days ago in the morning we experienced blackouts but it didn't affect our life," said a Shenyang resident who only gave his surname.
"I don't think our life was affected, but maybe the industries have suffered from power outages," resident Shi Xi said.
Last week, one northeastern suburb of the city suffered unexpected blackouts that shut down traffic lights and clogged roads.
Liaoning's provincial media reported that several Shenyang suburban districts would be subject to rolling blackouts this week.
Factories have been ordered to suspend production, threatening to disrupt global flows of smartphones and other goods made in China.
China's energy consumption and industrial emissions have surged as manufacturers rush to fill foreign demand at a time when competitors elsewhere are hampered by anti-coronavirus controls.
State Grid Corp., the world's biggest power distributor, issued a pledge to ensure adequate supplies.
State media say local governments have signed long-term coal contracts to ensure adequate suppliers.
