Darvaza Gas Crater: The Eternal Flame of Turkmenistan
The Darvaza gas crater, or Door to Hell, is a burning pit in Turkmenistan's Karakum Desert, about 60-70 meters wide and 30 meters deep. Ignited in the 1980s to prevent toxic gas leaks, the fire was meant to burn out quickly but continues today. In 2010, Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow proposed controlling its impact on gas fields and, by 2022, aimed to extinguish it for environmental and health reasons, though it still blazes. The crater, a popular tourist site with a rough access road and nearby yurts, was first descended by explorer George Kourounis in 2013, who called it a “coliseum of fire” in his National Geographic feature.
