Battle rages for hills overlooking Tuzla
Encouraged by minor territorial gains, Bosnian government troops on Wednesday (22/3) went on the offensive again for control of strategic hills northeast of Tuzla. Bosnian Serb forces in the area said their lines had stayed firm in the fighting which began on Monday in the Majevica hills. The fighting has alarmed UN officials who have appealed in vain for both sides to stop. Captain Sultan Babar, a UN spokesman in Tuzla, said more than 500 detonations were recorded south-east of the Majevica hills. Three western hilltops taken by Bosnian government forces on Monday were recaptured by Bosnian Serbs late on Tuesday as reinforcements arrived. Government forces have been trying to take control of the hills in an attempt to stop Serb attacks on Tuzla which is held by the government. Bosnian Serbs say the government offensives have unilaterally broken the ceasefire agreement. Their leader, Radovan Karadzic said that for the moment, his forces will not attack, but will defend their lines.
