An inspiring journey of sustainability: Platanera Río Sixaola, a banana farm in Costa Rica, was one of the very first Rainforest Alliance Certified farms in the world. Lidia Quirós Montiel is one of the farm's original workers, beginning in 1993.
This farm has gone above and beyond the requirements of certification to become an internationally-renowned example of sustainability. From its bat "hotels," apiary, and biodegradable banana bags to its 100% solar energy usage and program monitoring the water quality of local streams and rivers, Platanera Río Sixaola is a model of sustainable farming.
To stop deforestation and avert further loss of arable land, conventional farms must embrace sustainable agriculture. Every farm’s sustainability journey starts with a first step. It’s important to note that Platanera Río Sixaola wasn’t always like this—the farm’s stellar practices are the result of a 27-year commitment to continuous improvement.
