Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, has been sentenced to more than two years in jail for “insulting Turkish officials” and given a “political ban” that would lock him out of a potential presidential bid against President Erdogan in Turkey’s presidential elections next year.
Imamoglu will still be able to appeal the verdict and possibly lift the ban and avoid jail time if successful.
