On the eve of the Armenian Genocide commemoration, thousands of people flooded the streets of Yerevan, the capital of Armenia, for a solemn march from Republic Square to the Tsitsernakaberd Memorial.


The torchlight procession, a poignant tradition, was held to mark the 109th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, a somber chapter in the nation's history.


Commencing at 7:15 PM local time, the event stretched into the late hours of the night, concluding around 11:30 PM Yerevan time. Among the attendees was The Armenian Report, documenting the emotional tribute.


Notable figures, including Armenia’s 3rd president and a host of current and former government officials, joined the procession.


Organized annually by the ARF Youth Organization in Armenia, the torchlight procession drew a crowd of around 10,000 individuals. Carrying torches, they marched through the city streets, honoring the memory of the estimated 1.5 million Armenians who perished in Ottoman Turkey over a century ago.


As the procession wound through the city, activists illuminated the night sky by igniting the flags of Turkey and Azerbaijan, symbolizing the ongoing struggle against aggression from Azerbaijan.


The Armenian Genocide, perpetrated during the final years of the Ottoman Empire, remains a poignant reminder of historical atrocities. Up to 1.5 million Armenians fell victim to the brutalities of the Ottoman Turks, marking it as the first genocide of the 20th century.


April 24 holds particular significance for Armenians worldwide, observed as Genocide Remembrance Day, commemorating the commencement of the mass killings in 1915. As the march concluded, the solemnity of the occasion lingered, serving as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy of those lost to history's darkest chapters.
