In this video you will learn how to make yogurt at home using a pot, some milk, some yogurt starter (commercial/store bought yogurt), and a yogurt maker.
I've tried several different ways to make yogurt over the years (in the oven, with an instapot...), none have worked as well as the basic yolife yogurt maker method.
This video shows the starter being commercially bought yogurt, but you could also do this with yogurt culture. The reality is, once you make yogurt once, you can repeatedly use that yogurt for the culture, so conceivably would never have to buy yogurt again.
Couple tips:
1. Bringing the heated milk up to approx. 150-160 degrees seems to work best. On my stove, with heating it, this takes 10-11 minutes. Do NOT overboil it, as it makes a giant mess.
2. Skim the skin that forms (I call it yogurt scum in the video), before pouring the milk off. If you leave it on, the yogurt is not as smooth.
3. Only use 1-2 teaspoons of yogurt as starter. Using more does not make it better - it actually makes it worse.
4. You must use natural unflavoured yogurt to start.
5. Make sure the milk is mildly warm when pouring it. If it's too hot, it will kill the yogurt culture, and the yogurt won't work.
6. Let it "cook" for 6- hours.
7. Let it cool on your stove or counter for 30-40 minutes, then put it into your fridge for 3-4 hours to thicken up, or overnight.
I used one litre of milk, which is what fits into the container and the yolife machine the best.
