Tehran Big Bazaar (15 Khordad Bazaar)
Tehran Grand Bazaar, which is also known as Tehran Bazaar or even 15 Khordad Bazaar, is the beating heart of the economy and the hub of people's presence not only in Tehran but also in other cities. This is an old market place located in the 12th district of Tehran. Undoubtedly, Tehran Grand Bazaar is one of the most important historical buildings in Tehran.
It is interesting to know that it was during the time of Feth Ali Shah Qajar that parts of the bazaar were built and in this way the whole bazaar complex was expanded in such a way that it extended towards the citadel and the Jame Mosque and the distance between these two places was It became the most prosperous and famous parts of the Grand Bazaar.
One of the wonders of Tehran Grand Bazaar is that it is not only important in terms of historical assets, but also the history of Tehran and Iran was formed in this place. For example, the history of the constitutional period is a good evidence for this era.
Iranian Islamic architecture of Tehran Bazaar is the same style that can be seen in most of the old markets of Iran such as Tabriz Bazaar, Zanjan, Birjand and Mashhad. Even if you are not looking to buy anything, you can enjoy the amazing views of the market. Such a place cannot be visited in one or two hours and you have to spare a day for walking around the market. The high potential of Tehran's Grand Bazaar as a tourist and sightseeing place has made it one of the markets that are more than buying and selling goods.
History of Tehran Grand Bazaar
The Grand Bazaar of Tehran is a work left from the Qajar period, which some consider it to be the work of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar, while others attribute its construction to the Safavid era, and Shah Tahmasb Safavid is named as the main builder of this bazaar. Agha Mohammad Khan, the founder of the Qajar dynasty, chose Tehran as the capital of Iran in the 19th century and created many new changes in the fabric of Tehran. As a result, some royal palaces, mosques, gates and Shams-ul-Amara mansion, which are located around Tehran's Grand Bazaar, are reminders of this era.
In Thomas Herbert's travelogue, there is a description of the Tehran market in 1308 AH and during the Safavid rule over Iran, which Thomas Herbert described as an open market.
These explanations show that the big bazaar of Tehran existed during the Safavid period, and during the reign of Naser al-Din Shah, new parts were added to it and this bazaar was roofed.
The interesting point is that the architects of many of these cases were not Iranian. Naseruddin Shah hired a group of French architects to design some gates and important areas in Iran. The hot summer weather in Tehran is the most important reason for the building of Tehran Bazaar, so that people do not feel hot while shopping. From the 19th century until today, many tourists consider this market to be the strongest attraction of Tehran.
In terms of history, the Grand Bazaar was created between 907 and 1135 and during the Safavid rule. According to the historical remains, the first building that was built in the market of Tehran was during the period of Shah Tahmasab I Safavid. According to the writing of Tani al-Dawlah, the big and small four sides of this market were built during the reign of Feth Ali Shah Qajar.
It was during the time of Naser al-Din Shah that the main entrance named Bazar Bozhar was built and even other entrances were organized during this period. Taking this into account, Naseruddin Shah's period should be considered as one of the golden periods of Tehran market, in which many constructions took place in Tehran market. It was after this time that in the following periods, the number of market orders increased more and more. In fact, the lines that we are dealing with in the market today were all built at this time. It is not bad to know that the name of Tehran's Grand Bazaar is in the list of national works of Iran since November 2, 1356 with number 1540.
