Not sure if nutritional yeast is good for you?
Here I will answer the six most common concerns that people have about nutritional yeast.
Is Nutritional Yeast Highly Processed And Genetically Modified?
No, or at least not processed to the extent of some other food products out there. It is, of course, cultivated, heated, and then dried to make it what it is. Unless additional ingredients or further processing have been applied, then relative to other foods, the processed element of nutritional yeast is very modest. As for genetically modified nutritional yeast, that is very much in the minority. Most nutritional yeast is natural and minimally processed.
Does Nutritional Yeast Contain Monosodium Glutamate?
No. Unless Monosodium Glutamate has been added explicitly to some nutritional yeast products. The evidence on MSG is still split on whether it is detrimental to health or not. Glutamate is naturally occurring in foods, including nutritional yeast. In contrast, MSG is man-made and added artificially, so always check the product label.
Are There Better Sources For Nutrients Than Nutritional Yeast?
It is indisputable that nutritional yeast is a powerhouse of minerals, vitamins, and nutrients. There are, of course, other foods that offer excellent nutritional value, but everyone is different and has different needs, tastes, and preferences. But the fundamental fact is that nutritional yeast is an excellent plant-based source of nutrients.
Can Nutritional Yeast Cause Unpleasant Digestive Side Effects?
It can, but like anything else, only if you over-do it. Keep in mind that nutritional yeast has a very high fiber content. While a high fiber diet can certainly help with digestion, eating too much too soon may actually be counter-productive and cause bloating and diarrhea. So, as long as you don't over-do it, your stomach should be just fine.
Do Producers Add Vitamins Such As Folic Acid To Nutritional Yeast?
Yes and no. Basically, nutritional yeast comes in two main types – fortified and unfortified. Fortified means that the manufacturer has added additional nutrients and vitamins to their products, which is not really necessary as nutritional yeast in its natural form comes with an outstanding amount of nutritional value.
Does Nutritional Yeast Contain Mold Toxins?
Ultimately, yeast is fungi, and yes, some fungi can come with the mold. So, always get your nutritional yeast from reputable manufacturers that have lab-tested products, cleared of mold toxins.
