Freak Out! (Mono).
Here's another rarity in the series "essential in mono but not available on cd".
It would probably be a bit of an overstatement to say that the 60's didn't truly start until this double elpee came out.
But what a shocker this must have been back in the day. The first of its kind psychedelic pop-art sleeve. The
perfectly executed compositions which range from conventional to completely nonsensical to everything in between and
beyond. The razor-sharp social commentary which was probably lost on most listeners at the time. The use of humor
as a powerful weapon. Most of all, Zappa made a point of propagandizing against the dogma's, religion, sexual
oppression and ignorance that he felt plagued his beloved country, sadly reminding us that there just never are enough
people quite like him around. So, let's have a look into the crazy world of the Mothers which may actually have been
the sanest place on earth in 1966.
Like Sgt. Peppers and Blonde on Blonde, this album comes through best in its original one-channel mix. The importance
and superiority of the monaural mixes of the latter two has finally been recognized but when it comes to Freak out!,
we are still left with stereo only (even though an exhausting 4CD box set was released in 2006).
