2. SOUNDBITE: (English) John Kerry, Democratic presidential candidate:
"When it comes to reality and what people are really facing in our country, (US President) George Bush has a very simple strategy. It is ignore it, deny it, and then try to hide it. And that is, that is exactly, we've seen that in Iraq. Incidentally, same page on the right hand column. (Holds up newspaper.) Bombs. Bomb targets US convoy. And it talks about what's happening every day in Iraq. But he just keeps saying, 'Oh, we're making progress. You know we're doing great.' We've got more terrorists there than we ever had the day they went in. And more territory is ceded to them. But George Bush says 'we're making progress'."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) John Kerry, Democratic presidential candidate:
"And now, because of this administration's failure of leadership, failure of judgement, because of their failure to act, we've got a shortfall of some 48 (m) million flu vaccines in our country. So what's happening with the flu vaccine is really an example of everything this administration does. Deny it. Pretend it's not there, and then try to hide it. When it comes out, act surprised, oh my gosh how did this happen to us?"

6. SOUNDBITE (English) George W. Bush, US President and Republican presidential candidate:
"Tomorrow is the one year anniversary of Senator (John) Kerry's vote against funding our troops. He's had many and conflicting positions on the issue and it's a case study into why his contradictions call into question is credibility and his ability to lead our nation. September 2003 as the 87 (b) billion funding package was being debated, Senator Kerry said it would be irresponsible to abandon our troops by voting against the measure. Just one month later he did exactly that irresponsible thing and he abandoned our troops in combat by voting against the funding."

8. SOUNDBITE (English) George W. Bush, US President and Republican presidential candidate:
"Since that terrible morning of September the 11th, 2001, we have fought the terrorists across the earth not for pride, not for power, but because the lives of our citizens are at stake. Our strategy is clear. We're defending our homeland, we're transferring our military. We will keep the all volunteer army an all volunteer army."

STORYLINE
US President and Republican presidential candidate George W. Bush on Saturday questioned Democratic presidential candidate Senator John Kerry's "ability to lead our nation," raising the Democrat's year-old opposition to emergency funding for the Iraq war to paint his rival as too fickle to be trusted with America's safety.
Bush said it was simple: Kerry failed to support American troops in harm's way when he voted against a funding bill for military and reconstruction efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Noting the vote was a year ago on Sunday, Bush mocked Kerry for at first saying it would be irresponsible to oppose the measure, and then doing just that.
Bush, repeating a common campaign charge, said the change of heart was purely for political expedience, coming just as former Vermont Governor Howard Dean was gaining steam as the party's anti-war candidate.
Bush, speaking in a 20-thousand-seat sports arena that appeared about half-full, said: "He (Kerry) abandoned our troops in combat by voting against the funding."
