Small unmanned air systems or ‘drones’ could offer a way of reducing the burden on the emergency services by mapping and tracking wildfires in real time, autonomously, enabling other efforts to be focused rapidly where they are needed to save lives. In 2019, the Fire Hack challenge saw teams from the US and the UK participate in a 'hackathon' to develop and enhance this capability.
