The first wristwatch was requested by a royal woman, the Queen of Naples, back in 1810. It featured a minute-repeating function and a thermometer—all woven into a bracelet made of hair woven with gold
thread.

Initially, wristwatches were popular among women in royalty, but it wasn’t until the late 19th century that men started sporting them, thanks to modern warfare. Today’s $101 billion watch market owes a lot to the Queen of Naples’ unique request.
