Years before SAINT VITUS, WITCHFINDER GENERAL, or CANDLEMASS uttered forth their cries from the crypt, Italy's DEATH SS ('SS' = Steve Sylvester, one of the primary band members) was drawing upon the unholy sounds of BLACK SABBATH and early 70s occult rockers such as BLACK WIDOW while upping the ante with horror-themed theatrical makeup and costumes straight out of ALICE COOPER's favorite nightmare. The strange and unique proto-doomy sounds the band recorded established a style that would be embraced and expanded upon by several other Italian bands throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. From the Latin chants of THE BLACK to the psychedelic weirdness of BLACK HOLE and the made-up phonetic language of PAUL CHAIN, there's a little something for all fans of Doom looking to explore the cobweb-coated corners of Metal's most downtrodden sub-genre. No other country ever made Doom Metal sound quite like this!
CORRECTION- MINOTAURI were from Finland, not Italy. Thanks to the folks in the chat for catching that mistake! Guess I was just too excited to mention this excellent doom band!
