"Well, closing arguments began today in the Sam Bankman-Fried fraud trial. A prosecutor, Nicholas Roos, argued that a pyramid of deceit is what Sam Bankman-Fried built on his way to deceiving investors in his FTX cryptocurrency exchange into putting all kinds of money on the exchange, billions of dollars so that he ultimately could steal it. And in all, prosecutors say he took about $10 billion, used it to make lavish donations by real estate investments of his own and to make contributions to political candidates so he could try to influence cryptocurrency legislation."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Larry Neumeister, Associated Press:
"His lawyer, Mark Cohen, made arguments to the jury claiming that prosecutors were trying to portray him as a villain, even a monster, on the way to saying they should put him in prison when his lawyer says he was just trying to save his companies and was acting legally and doing things for the right reasons. And now it's all been misinterpreted in hindsight and twisted in a way to make him look like a terrible person and to convince the jury to convict him of fraud and send him away, perhaps for decades in prison."

6. SOUNDBITE (English) Larry Neumeister, Associated Press:
"Sam Bankman-Fried testified over four days, only finished yesterday. He insisted that he didn't really know that his companies were in so much trouble and that he was only learned in the days and a couple of weeks beforehand that his company could go under and had taken out billions of dollars that they couldn't account for and that they might go under and they did then in November of 2022 file for bankruptcy. He was arrested a few weeks later, brought from the Bahamas, extradited from the Bahamas to New York to face trial. Initially freed to his parents home in Palo Alto, California. He was allowed to stay there until August, when Judge Lewis A. Kaplan here in Manhattan federal court, decided that he had tried to influence prospective witnesses. And he has made him stay in jail ever since."

STORYLINE:
In a closing argument, a prosecutor told New York jurors Wednesday to follow overwhelming evidence of FTX founder Sam Bankman-Fried's “pyramid of deceit” to find him guilty of defrauding customers and investors of at least $10 billion while a defense lawyer said prosecutors were unfairly portraying an honest entrepreneur as a monster.
“He told a story and he lied to you,” Roos told jurors a day after Bankman-Fried concluded his testimony at the monthlong trial.
