Facts About Tajikistan
***********************************************
Geography and Borders:
Tajikistan is a landlocked country located in the heart of Central Asia. It shares borders with Kyrgyzstan to the north, China to the east, Afghanistan to the south, and Uzbekistan to the west and northwest. Additionally, Tajikistan includes the Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous region, with its capital at Khorugh (Khorog).
Elevation and Mountains:
Although Tajikistan encompasses the smallest land area among the five Central Asian states, it boasts more and higher mountains than any other country in the region. The Pamir Mountains, often referred to as the “Roof of the World,” are a prominent feature of Tajikistan’s landscape.
Independence:
Tajikistan gained independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. It was a constituent republic of the USSR until that time.
Capital City:
The capital city of Tajikistan is Dushanbe. Interestingly, the name “Dushanbe” means “Monday” in Persian.
Glacier Record:
Tajikistan is home to the world’s longest glacier outside the polar regions.
High Dam:
The country hosts the world’s second-highest dam.
Ethnic Diversity:
Tajiks form the ethnic majority in the country, and their national language is Tajik, which is a variety of Persian. Russian serves as the official inter-ethnic language.
Religion:
While Tajikistan is constitutionally secular, Islam is nominally adhered to by approximately 97.5% of the population.
