Chairman of the European Parliament Brexit Steering Group, Guy Verhofstadt, confirmed on Feb. 7. that British Prime Minister Theresa May assured the EU parliament that there would be a Brexit backstop in any deal, in order to provide "a safe guard in the Good Friday Agreement."
The assurance came as the president of the European Parliament welcomed May to Brussels on Feb. 7 for a renewed attempt at another Brexit deal.
However, Antonio Tajani warned that the EU and Britain are on the verge of an "economic and human catastrophe" if they fail to finalize the Brexit agreement.
Following talks with May, Tajani said Thursday: "We are very concerned. ... This is the reality of a no-deal Brexit."
Tajani, whose European Parliament, like the U.K. Parliament, must endorse any deal by March 29, says that lawmakers do not want to renegotiate the legally binding divorce agreement.
