Rabindranath Tagore one of the luminaries of 19th century India and the undisputed doyen of Bengali literature was a philosopher-sage an educationist and a multifaceted artist. He was born as the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore.

His father was associated with the Tattvabodhini Sabha one of the fore-runners of the Brahmo Samaj a socio-religious sect that tried to uphold the monastic basis of Hinduism found in the Upanishads.
In his fascinating autobiography Jeebansmriti Tagore discussed his teachers and his experience at St. Xavier's School his early attempts at poetry and above all his family members. His elder brother Jyotirindranath was a source of inspiration in his maturing as a talented artist. His English experience at a young age left quite an impact in his art. Tagore later reminisced in charming language about English society English ladies and most importantly western music.
Tagore may have been a passionate adherent of the modern Brahmo ideals pioneered by his forefathers but as a man of letters he turned to every classical tradition that his country was home to. In no other literary artist has ancient India with its myths its literature its legends and its philosophy come to life with such flamboyant eminence. Some of his most celebrated volumes of poetry include Manasi (1890) Sonar Tari (1894) Gitanjali (1910) Gitimalya (1914) and Balaka (1916). His major plays are Raja (1910) Daakghar (1912) Achalayatan (1912) Muktadhara (1922) and Raktakaravi (1926).
