In two weeks I've bitten two suspensions from the Rift forums: the first as a twenty-four-hour suspension for "discussing moderator actions" (mentioning Apotheosys is bad, kids) and the second, a day later, for "unproductive post content". Now, I can take a suspension when I warrant it, and I have in the past, but the post in question was pretty solid: it countered claims Archonix made during the State of the Game post, nd was wrapped up into six questions that the company refuses to answer at the end of it.
Trion's recent actions have pointed to a company in trouble, which isn't surprising. They decided to follow the Mists of Panderia idea of "quantity over quality" when it comes to content in Nightmare Tide, and that failed horribly for Blizzard. But they double down on it and refuse to admit it has failed. More to the point, they are so worried about loss of revenue that they have begun to move things specifically over to the credit store in an attempt to force people to use real money to get it. This entire debacle started with Trion announcing that earring slots and the Planeswalker: Water unlock would only be purchasable for credits, no longer with Void Stones (and justified it with, “You can buy REX in-game for platinum, so we aren’t breaking with our promise you can get everything you need with in-game currency”), and was followed last week by the announcement that free-to-play players would no longer be able to stack dungeon charges, queue for specific dungeons or warfronts, and gain or use rest experience, labeling these as convenience. These decisions have led to significant backlash on the forums, not just from the annoyed bittervets like me, but from longterm defenders of the company as well. It’s gotten so bad that over three-dozen people have recorded suspensions for tame posts that were critical of the ideas, and that number is most certainly higher.
So, in the spirit of reminding Trion that the customer does, and will, call them on their lies, this video is made in the hopes that it sheds some light on the health of Rift.
