The #Buriganga River (Bengali: বুড়িগঙ্গা Buŗigônga "Old Ganges") flows past the southwest outskirts of Dhaka city, the capital of Bangladesh. Its average depth is 7.6 metres (25 ft) and its maximum depth is 18 metres (58 ft).The #Buriganga is economically very important to Dhaka. Launches and country boats provide connection to other parts of Bangladesh, a largely riverine country. When the Mughals made Dhaka their capital in 1610, the banks of the #Buriganga were already a prime location for trade. The river was also the city's main source of drinking water.
The #Meghna River (Bengali: মেঘনা নদী) is one of the most important rivers in Bangladesh,[1] one of the three that forms the Ganges Delta, the largest delta on earth, which fans out to the Bay of Bengal. A part of the Surma-Meghna River System, Meghna is formed inside Bangladesh in Kishoreganj District above the town of Bhairab Bazar by the joining of the Surma and the Kushiyara, both of which originate in the hilly regions of eastern India as the Barak River. The #Meghna meets its major tributary, the Padma, in Chandpur District. Other major tributaries of the #Meghna include the Dhaleshwari, the Gumti, and the Feni. The Meghna empties into the Bay of Bengal in Bhola District via four principal mouths, named Tetulia (Ilsha), Shahbazpur, Hatia, and Bamni.
The #Padma (Bengali: পদ্মা Pôdda) is a major river in Bangladesh and India (downstream of Giria). It is the main distributary of the Ganges, flowing generally southeast for 120 kilometres (75 mi) to its confluence with the #Meghna River near the Bay of Bengal.[1] The city of Rajshahi is situated on the banks of the river.[2] However, over 256 square miles of land, as large as Chicago, has been lost due to erosion of #Padma since 1966.
