Virtual Wine Tasting with James Hall at Patz & Hall Winery Sonoma California
GAIL, STEVE & JOE DUTTON
In 1967, Warren Dutton planted the first Chardonnay field in far western Sonoma. Today, sons Steve and Joe Dutton, along with their mother Gail, carry on in Warren’s pioneering footsteps running what is now one of Sonoma County’s most successful vineyard operations.
GROWERS
The Dutton family is one of the oldest grape growing families in Sonoma, with some of the finest sites. They are Chardonnay specialists that have helped to elevate the reputation of Russian River Valley Chardonnay into an internationally recognized region, synonymous with quality.
BILL PRICE
Bill Price has been a significant figure in the California wine industry since he purchased Beringer Wine Estates in 1996, and took the company public.
BILL PRICE
GROWER
Our relationship with Bill Price started when he purchased Durell Vineyard in 1997, the famous vineyard in Sonoma Valley, we had previously sourced Chardonnay from. Our relationship deepened when he purchased Gap’s Crown Vineyard, one of our favorite sites for Pinot Noir in the Sonoma Coast, where we have been working with fruit from the original plantings. Bill’s commitment to making great wines makes him a fine partner in our journey to create the very best wines possible from the greatest sites in Sonoma
GAP’S CROWN VINEYARD
SONOMA COAST
After selling Beringer in 2000, Bill remained active in the wine business, buying a stake in Kistler in 2008, and founding Vincraft soon after. Through Vincraft, Bill is a partner in Three Sticks, Gary Farrell, Price Chanin and Durell Vineyard. In 2013, Bill purchased Gap’s Crown, which has become the cornerstone of his vineyard portfolio.
HISTORY
Patz & Hall was founded in 1988 by four talented individuals: Donald Patz, James Hall, Anne Moses and Heather Patz.
JAMES HALL
FOUNDER & WINEMAKER
Since 1988 founder and winemaker James Hall has guided the Patz & Hall winemaking program, instilling it with his own boldness, imagination and trademark perfectionism. Combining a belief in great viticulture, traditional winemaking practices, and the judicious use of innovative techniques, James has earned a reputation for crafting dramatic benchmark Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs that balance vibrant power with vineyard-inspired depth and sophistication.
Sparkling
Here at Patz & Hall, we have always loved great Champagnes and sparklers, and as a winery that has long focused exclusively on Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, bubbles just make sense to us. As with still wines, the quality of your grapes is every bit as important for sparkling wine.
Chardonnay
At Patz & Hall, we are dedicated to crafting benchmark Chardonnays that articulate the nuanced depth and character of this legendary wine grape. To create these wines, we work alongside some of California’s most renowned winegrowers – including such icons as Larry Hyde and Lee Hudson – to source the finest fruit. In the winery, we strive to honor the expressive personality of each vineyard, and every new vintage, to produce lush and compelling Chardonnays with an authentic sense of place.
Pinot Noir
From the cool-climate charm of our Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir to our sought-after single-vineyard bottlings from the Russian River Valley, Carneros, Mendocino and the Santa Lucia Highlands, our Pinot Noir program captures the vibrant diversity of this exceptional varietal. In the winery, we craft wines that balance the depth, power and purity of Pinot Noir with elegance, structure and finesse.
