Gretsch 8" x 14" Full Range Swamp Dawg Mahogany- this is a cool drum, although it is currently on sale on Ebay, but now I'm not sure if I want to sell it! The 8" depth is really nice to play- it has a different kind of resonance and feel. The Mahogany, which was used a lot in previous eras, is really dark and warm. I also put an Aquarian Modern Vintage Medium head on in, which makes it even more classic sounding. I have it kind of medium but I think it could sound really good lower as well. I used a regular coated Ambassador on it and that sounded great.
I tried an Aquarian Jack DeJohnette on it and that had a totally different sound, but maybe a little too ringy for my taste. I think the "ringiness" of certain types of drums is something I had never really thought about, especially the difference between the drums alone up close and the drums sound out in the house or in the mix. I think some ringiness can be great. Some overtones though can be weird. I've heard drums in concerts sound amazing and then went up and played on them and it was so different. Cymbals are certainly like this as well.
