On the damp morning of Saturday, May 28th, Reading & Northern would run a special train, with none other than T-1 #2102, which has been recently restored. Hundreds upon hundreds of people were out today, to catch or ride the debut of the newly restored 4-8-4 steam engine. This run was the return of the famous “Iron Horse Rambles” which before this event hadn’t ran in over 30 years, the last time being 1991. For many, this was a special day indeed, traffic along the roads were crazy, with railfans chasing the train almost everywhere, no matter where you were, there would be a Railfan waiting. The train consisted of 19 cars, and truly showed off the powers of this mechanical marvel.

The video starts in a field in Molino, PA, just about 3 miles north of Port Clinton. Tons of railfans are pulled over and parked waiting for the train. After the train clears, everybody gets a move onto the next spot, our spot in particular happens to be East Mahanoy Junction, where 2102 puts on a show for everybody to see while climbing up the hill. Our final spot was the Jim Thorpe station, where all of us railfans arranged a photo line to wait for the 2102. The engineer would use both whistles this engine had, one of which being the Reading hooter and the other being the Reading 6-chime. The closing shot of the video is a quick shot of 2102 sitting in Jim Thorpe yard getting serviced and prepped for the run back to North Reading Yard.

This was one hell of an experience, and I’m glad I was able to join everybody, and I hope everybody got the shots they wanted.
