Full review and standardized testing of the HO scale GMD-1 made by Rapido Trains Inc.
Locomotive weight: 424 grams / 15.0 oz
Drawbar Pull: 86.66 grams / 3.05 oz
Drawbar Push: 96.66 grams / 3.41 oz
This model was announced in January 2016 and delivered in June 2017 with three variations each featuring 6 road numbers (18 total) and one undecorated version. The models are available in DC/Silent or DC/DCC with ESU Loksound.
MSRP:
DC/Silent - $249.95
DC/DCC/ESU Loksound - $349.95
Detail - Very good. All of the unique CN specific details and very accurate to the prototype. Full cab interior and lot's of underbody detail for the discerning modeller who runs trains upside down. Additional detail parts included for modellers who want to model the locomotive as a later representation then the as built, out of the box version.
Operation/Drive train - Very very slow crawl speed, nice smooth, quiet operation 9.5/10
Weight - Weighing in at 424 grams / 15.0 oz and being a shorter 4 axle , non-cowl, locomotive this is a very decent weight. Compared to other 4 axle locomotives on the market it can out-pull an Athearn Genesis CN Geep by 30 grams which is very substantial. 9/10
Sound - Great sounding recordings in the ESU decoder. Prime mover is nice and throaty and the volume levels are set at a very acceptable level right out of the box. Goofy easter egg sounds featuring Bob & Doug Mackenzie. 9/10
Lighting - Number boards, head/ditch lights and working class lights at each end are all at a very realistic brightness and no light bleed. Extra awesome that each lighting feature has it's own function besides the numberboards 9.5/10
OVERALL SCORE: 9.2 / 10
Pretty much perfect. The flange squeal feature is a nice touch and something new. Probably safe to say there will not be a better model of this locomotive ever released.
