What is the best hip replacement procedure?
Hello. I'm Dr, Dan Albright with Raleigh Orthopedics. I'd like to talk about what I think is the best hip replacement operation out there, and that's through the anterior approach.
Anterior - that means from the front of your hip. Most of the country traditionally goes from the posterior approach. And that's a great approach, and it works. But dislocations are higher and going through the anterior approach, there are fewer dislocations.
It's an easier surgery to recover from, in my opinion. Less muscle damage. People are at home. Patients are home within a day, sometimes the same day or the next, from an anterior hip operation.
So anatomy matters when you're doing a hip replacement, and the newer trend that I started learning in 1987 actually, is the anterior approach. I also do the lateral approach for tougher hip surgeries - a little more damage to muscles. I use to do the posterior approach, I've chosen not to do that because of the advantages of the anterior and I really enjoy just splitting muscles not cutting tendons, and then patients have no restrictions afterward and go home pretty soon.
So if you'd like a second opinion or a consult about your hip pain or hip arthritis problem, I'm happy to see you at any time. Please just give me a call on our appointment line. Thanks.
