STORYLINE
A small column of Russian tanks and armoured vehicles withdrew from the strategic Georgian city of Gori on Tuesday in the direction of South Ossetia.
The column of three tanks and five armoured personnel carriers (APCs) were filmed as they passed the village of Ruisi, 12 kilometres (7.45 miles) west of the city.
According to a Russian military officer, Colonel Igor Konoshenkov, the unit was ultimately headed back to Russia, although Konoshenkov would give no timetable.
The troops from the Sixth Company of the Second Battalion of the Russian 58th Army are based in Vladikavkaz, North Ossetia, and had been deployed into Georgia four days ago.
Konoshenkov said Tuesday's move was part of Russia's pullback mandated by a cease-fire that required both sides to return to positions held before fighting broke out on 7 August in South Ossetia, a separatist Georgian province with close ties to Russia.
But the withdrawal was only partial.
In Poti - Georgia's key oil port city - Russian troops blocked access to the city's naval and commercial ports and towed the missile boat Dioskuria, one of the Georgian navy's most sophisticated vessels, out of sight of observers.
A loud explosion was heard minutes later.
An Associated Press photographer reported Russian trucks and armoured personnel carriers leaving the port with about 20 blindfolded and handcuffed men.
