Handler was an American businesswoman and inventor who co-founded the toy company Mattel in 1945 with her husband Elliot Handler and Harold "Matt" Matson. She is best known for her creation of the Barbie doll, which she named after her daughter Barbara.
Handler noticed that her daughter enjoyed playing with paper dolls and acting out adult roles. This inspired Handler to design a 3D doll that allowed girls to imagine their future adult lives. In 1959, Handler unveiled Barbie at the American Toy Fair in New York City. Barbie was groundbreaking as one of the first toy dolls modeled as an adult woman rather than a baby or girl.
Despite initial skepticism that the doll was too mature for young girls, Barbie became an unprecedented success. Ruth Handler positioned Barbie as a "Teen Age Fashion Model," allowing the doll to enter the toy market and generate great profits for Mattel. Handler oversaw the launch of new Barbie outfits, accessories, playsets, and lifestyle brand partners. By the time Handler left Mattel in 1975, over 1 billion Barbie dolls had been sold. Handler was inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1997 in recognition of her achievements in business and her creation of the most famous doll in the world.
