The Department of Marine Engineering of the FMA is responsible for conducting Marine Engineering and Related programmes for ongoing and intended Seafarers. While the programmes are designed to be Maritime Safety Authority certified, they are also Fiji National University accredited in its own merit.
Scope
The training for the Marine Engineering career at FMA includes lectures, real physical demonstrations, and simulations demonstrations.
The programmes follow two fundamental streams that enable people to be to develop them-selves to reach the maximum knowledge and ability in such a career path. These are the Trade Diploma in Marine Engineering and the Upgrading programme.
The Trade Diploma consists of three stages at the Academy and two stages of sea time on the ship whilst the Upgrading begins with the Engine Watch Rating, Class 5, Class 4, Class 3, and Watchkeeper respectively.
The top end of the programmes should develop a person to become a Chief Engineer on an Ocean Going vessel of any kind size engine used to propelling a ship.
Department’s Goals: The goal of the Marine Engineering Department is to conduct training programs in line with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) Seafarers Training Certification and Watch keeping Code (STCW 1978 as amended). In addition, to efficiency impart knowledge and skill-based training programs with a view to enhance maritime safety and environmental protection.
Department Roles: The role of the Marine Engineering Department is to cater to the needs and demands of the local and international shipping industries, in accordance with the STCW code 1978 as amended, by:
Providing a valid educational program in agreement with the industrial needs and demand.
Providing knowledge and skill based training (Competency Based Training) to students.
Developing and reviewing existing programs to be in agreement with the FNU General Academic Statute.
Assist practicing seafarers in upgrading their maritime qualifications in accordance with the STCW 2010 code 1978 as amended and the Marine act 1986 as amended.

Administration
To ensure that a good communication system exists in the organization.

To liaise with the Head of Academics and other departments in the daily functions of the academy.

Teaching /Learning Process
To provide knowledge, skills and attitudes to students in accordance with the technological changes, needs and demands in the shipping industries.
To provide quality lesson and semester plans.
To provide quality teaching materials, equipment and good learning environment to the students.
To maintain high professional teaching standards.
To develop and review existing programs.
To liaise with the local shipping industry concerning program development needs.
To record student assessment and attendance.
To provide counseling to the students.
To enforce the Occupational, health & Safety standards in practical classes.
Enrolment
Enrolment process for the Marine Simulation programs will follow the FNU enrolment and selection procedures.
Assessment
To ensure that all assessment methods reflects the assessment criteria of the Modular Program
To compile examination results and present them at the academic Board and prepare re-sit exam papers
To update student’s Records Cards.
To assist in the auditing of programs
To ensure that students’ academic transcripts are prepared.
To ensure knowledge based criteria will be satisfied through a combination of practical exercises and assessments will be a combination of practical, written and oral assessments.
To ensure skill based criteria will be satisfied through practical exercises and assessments will be a combination of written assessments, practical assessments, assignments and oral assessments.
