50 Philippine fighter pilots test the newly arrived A-10 Thunderbolt II Warthogs from the U.S.
In 2024, the Philippine Air Force (PAF) had a golden opportunity to enhance its combat capabilities with the arrival of a new fleet of A-10 Thunderbolt II attack aircraft, also known as Warthogs, from the United States. A total of 50 Filipino fighter pilots were tasked with testing these aircraft in various combat scenarios and exercises.
The A-10 Thunderbolt II, manufactured by Fairchild-Republic, first flew in 1972 and has since been the backbone of US Air Force ground attack operations. This aircraft is known for its durability, low-altitude maneuverability, and its main weapon, the deadly GAU-8/A Avenger cannon.
The arrival of the A-10 Thunderbolt II in the Philippines is part of a defense cooperation agreement between the Philippines and the United States. This agreement aims to enhance the Philippine military's capabilities and strengthen strategic alliances in Southeast Asia.
To operate these aircraft, the 50 Filipino pilots underwent intensive training at various air bases in the Philippines and the United States. This training included flight theory, combat maneuvers, and ground attack tactics. These pilots are expected to master all operational aspects of the A-10 Thunderbolt II.
