12. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Xavier Mercé, tourism councillor, Barcelona:
"It's evident that the tourism sector has been reactivated. It has normalized to some extent. But with some differentiated elements. There is more proximity tourism. People want to go and travel. But fortunately, low-cost tourism isn't working the way it was before the pandemic. Long haul travel has decreased a lot because of the high prices. So, it's more about proximity tourism. Historically, we understood proximity as tourists coming from within Spain. But nowadays, proximity means tourism from the rest of Europe. Like Italians, French or English."

21. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Daniel Pardo, member of Tourism Degrowth civil platform:
"The profits earned by mass tourism often help increase social inequality. Both the local economy and the labour market have specialized in a tourism sector that doesn't distribute the wealth it creates. The money stays in the hands of the very few. And the rest of the people end up being forced to move out of town or being exploited in their jobs. The same way in its day the economy of Barcelona specialized in tourism, the task now is to reverse it. And then diversify it in other sectors of the economy that are more socially just. And above all, make sure that the tourism sector isn't as proportionally giant as it is today."
