Earworm (n) – A tune that repeats in the mind
Be careful! Once you’ve listened to this earworm, it will be in your head all day.
Funky (adj) – Rhythmic beat
Turn up the radio. I love this funky song.
Gig (n) – Concert performance
We are going to a gig later. Would you like to come?
Groove (vb) - To like or enjoy music enthusiastically, to dance
I love to groove along to this music. It makes me so happy.
Grower (n) – A song which isn’t necessarily great on the first listen, but better when subsequently listened to
It may not sound great at the moment, but after a few listens I’m sure it will really like it. It’s a grower.
Head-banging (n) - Violent shaking of one’s head while listening to rock music
Did you see the fans with long hair at the front head-banging? I think so. All I could see was hair.
Hook (n) - A catchy chorus or a repeated instrumental passage in a piece of popular music
The best part of this song is the hook. It gets me every time.
Hype (n) - Extravagant or intensive publicity or promotion
There is a lot of hype in the media about this band. Let’s hear if they are as good as everyone says they are.
Ill (adj) – Signifying the extremely good quality of a track
This song is so ill. I can’t believe how great it is.
Ivories (n) – Keys of a piano
The way he tickles the ivories will leave you spellbounded.
Joanna (n) – Piano
She can play the drums, but she’s even better on the joanna.
Jock (n) - Disc Jockey
This jock plays all my favourite music. I love her show.
Mashup (n) – A blend of pre-recorded songs to create a new one

Muso (n) - An aficionado of music
Leon is a real muso. He knows so much about all genres of music.
Noodlin’ (vb) – Play insignificantly
Sometimes they come up with new songs, just when they are noodlin’.
Pogo (vb) – Jump up and down on the spot
There was so little room at the front of the stage, the music fans could only pogo.
Roadie (n) - A person employed by a touring band of musicians to set up and maintain equipment
The roadies are the ones who do all of the hard work, but are the lowest paid of the people on the stage.
Tight (adj) – All musicians playing in rhythm and precisely
The band members were really tight. It was like listening to the CD.
