Too many people study to improve & use their short-term results as a metric of how good they are, then stagnate. If you want to be successful in poker, you must constantly improve your skills! Having a process & growth orientated mindset over a result based mindset will help you elevate your poker game to the next level.
"It is so easy to overestimate the importance of one defining moment and underestimate the value of making small improvements on a daily basis." - James Clear. This quote can be applied to many things in life & your poker game is certainly one of them. Keep looking to make small 1% improvements each day and you will notice how quickly you become a much better poker player and increase your win rate!
Expected Value (EV) comes from spots where different strategies that you are implementing against your opponent is generating way more value for you than them. EV comes from making those small improvements, refining your poker strategy & subsequently gaining an edge over your opponents.
Studying isn't about binging for 20 hours before your next poker session. It's about a constant desire to learn with high-value time spent each week. Start by reflecting on your post-game habits. Get all of the wasted thoughts off your mind after a poker session. You should reset your mind to what's important. Some ideas of what you can do post poker session:
- Run or share poker hands that you have marked during the session
- Articulate or write down your poker strategy
- Playing your best & improving between each poker session
Too many poker players let their emotions take over from what the key aspects of improvement that they should be focusing on. Getting to the point that whether you win or lose does not affect how you feel is the ultimate goal!

It is almost impossible to limit only ever making a mistake once. However, if your goal is to try and limit the repetition of mistakes then you will succeed and improve at a far faster rate than most of your opponents at the poker table.
"If you want to get very good at something, find someone better than you & learn everything you can from them." - Jonathan Little. You must get rid of your ego, provide value and ask many questions! If your goal is only to improve, who cares if you were right?
Your goal should be to beat the game, not a specific game. Be professional with your finances & data, even when the stats aren't great. Never let your ego make decisions for you!
