The United Workers Party has called for a clear statement from the government on the Venezuela - Guyana border dispute. This follows measures instituted by President Nicolas Maduro on Tuesday to enforce the outcome of last Sunday’s Venezuelan referendum, where voters reportedly heavily backed Venezuela’s claim to the Essequibo region. Among resulting measures undertaken by Venezuela is the reconfiguration of Venezuela’s map to include the Essequibo and other immediate steps to emphasize Venezuela’s foothold there. While Maduro’s rhetoric remains largely symbolic, his remarks have unsettled Guyana’s leader Irfaan Ali who has taken the matter to the UN Security Council for appropriate action. Maduro’s statements have also attracted stern statements from the United States and Brazil, urging Venezuela to refrain from using military force to enforce its territorial claim.
