STORYLINE:
US President George W. Bush bid farewell on Wednesday to Aleksander Kwasniewski, saying the Polish president and close U.S. ally can leave office after 10 years with his "head held high."
Bush met with the outgoing Polish president in the Oval Office and the pair took questions from reporters.
Bush urged Syria to do more to seal its borders against Iraq-bound militants and warned that Washington expects Damascus to stay out of Lebanese domestic politics.
Bush said that he expects "Syria to do everything in her power to shut down the trans-shipment of suiciders and killers into Iraq."
"We expect Syria to be a good neighbour to Iraq. We expect Syria not to agitate killers in the Palestinian territory," he added.
Kwasniewski won favour in Washington by being among the small number of nations that has contributed troops to Iraq over the last couple of years - and the even smaller number that sent troops during the March 2003 invasion.
Kwasniewski promised that Polish troops will stay until the end of January as planned no matter who succeeds him as president.
Currently, around 1,500 Poles are now serving in Iraq.
But, Kwasniewski added, "We have to respect the right of the new government and the right of the new president to make their decisions about it."
During his visit, the Polish leader was also scheduled to meet Vice President Dick Cheney.
