Today on your 2014 Kia Forte, we're going to be taking a look at and showing you how to install CURT's 1 1/4" trailer hitch receiver. Now, this is what our hitch looks like when it's installed. You will be able to see the cross tube here at the bottom, as well as the receiver here at the back. But it does stay tucked up pretty nice where our cross tube is here, so it's really not that noticeable when you're standing up, you really have to get down here to notice it. And the collar here at the back has a nice reinforced collar on the end, that in my opinion is the best looking of all the hitches that go on the Forte. One of the things I did notice with this one is it does stick out a little bit further than the competitors as well, which means you're going to have greater clearance when inserting your accessories between the bumper and those accessories. With some of the models that fold up with it tucked in tighter on those other models, it may have contact with the bumper, whereas this one here, we've got that additional clearance, so folding it into the storage position is likely going to give you better results with this hitch. This is a class one, one and a quarter by one and a quarter receiver. So it's going to be great for all of your accessories, whether you're wanting to put a two bike platform rack in it and load it up with a couple of bikes, or maybe free up some space inside your vehicle by putting in a cargo carrier.
Now this one here is not rated high enough for a cargo carrier fully loaded up to the max, but you could still get some of that gear out of your car onto that carrier. You do just want to keep in mind that whatever you're putting in your receiver here for your tongue weight is going to be the weight of the components. So that would be like your cargo carrier, plus any weight that goes on it as well. It's also going to be great for any light duty towing applications. You don't really want to do a lot of towing with your Forte, but if you had maybe a small dirt bike or something, and you just needed to move around from one place to another, something really tiny, you'd be able to do that as well with this. This hitch uses a half inch hitch fitting clip. Now, one doesn't come included with the hitch, but we have plenty available here at etrailer.
You can also get locking ones to protect your investment for your accessories that you're putting in there. On bottom, we have plate style safety chain loops with a very large opening that should accommodate just about every shape, size and style of safety chain. Our little one has no problems, nor does the big one. This hitch features a 200 pound tongue weight, which is the force going down on top of the receiver. And like we discussed before, it's going to be great for a couple of bikes on a platform rack, or a cargo carrier. You again just want to keep in mind that 200 is your maximum for the entire weight of everything going in the receiver.
It also features a 2000 pound gross towing capacity, which is how much that it can pull behind it. And again, if you had something really small, you could tote that around with your Forte here. I do recommend that you verify in your vehicle's owner's manual, and ensure you don't exceed any of the towing capacities. Now I've got some measurements for you to help you when deciding on accessories. From the center of our hitch pin hole to the edge of our rear bumper, it measures about five inches. This is important when determining if your accessories can be placed fully into the receiver without contacting the bumper, and if it can be placed in their upright storage position without contacting the bumper.
And from the ground to the top inside edge of the receiver tube, it measures about 11 and a half inches. This is important when determining if you need a drop or rise or raised shank on any of your accessories. And since this one is so low, I do recommend a raised shank in your accessories. Our customer is going to be using this for a bike rack. In addition to the hitch, he also purchased Thule's DoubleTrack, which is a great option for your Forte here to bring a few bikes with you.Now that we've discussed some of the features of our hitch, why don't you follow along with me in the shop and we'll show you how to get it installed. It's a pretty easy installation, you do have to drop down the exhaust, but there's no trimming or drilling, with the exception of a panel that you could leave off if you don't want to trim it out. We'll begin our installation at the rear of the vehicle underneath by lowering down our exhaust. There's already a crossbeam there that'll catch it, so w
