Well here we are, day 12 of sheltering in place, and I've been hearing lots of reports from people who are flaunting the shelter in place rules. I am a Twitter user, and one of my favorite places to go on Twitter is Donald Trump's Twitter account - not to see what he is saying, of course, because it's usually just a bunch of nonsense and hot air, but I go to see what the comments are.
The comments are fantastic, and they come from all parts of the political spectrum. But I happen to notice that those on the right side of the spectrum tend to believe that COVID-19 is a hoax, or it's a Chinese bio-weapon, that it's basically just a really bad flu, it's hysteria created by the media, and for those reasons, they don't really need to adhere too closely to the shelter in place rules. They'll say that they personally are not worried about getting sick and dying from the virus, so it's their choice to blow off the quarantine and just do whatever they want. The problem with that is that it's not about them - it's about everyone else.
We know that many people who get COVID-19 never present symptoms, or if they do, it's very mild and they only feel bad for a couple-few days. The problem is that they are contagious for a period of a couple of weeks, and as the virus is highly infectious, it's quite likely that if you have it, and you're going out in public, that you're going to be spreading it. And if only 1% of people who get it end up in the hospital, well, you can see that pushing 1-2 million people into hospitals in a short period of time is going to cause lots of pain, suffering, and death which will be exacerbated by lack of beds, ventilators, and antiviral drugs. So let's do what we can to slow the spread - do it for your family, friends, community, and country. After all: we should ask not what your country can do for you! Ask what you can do for your country. Sebastian "Seb" Frey • CA Lic. 01369847 • Compass
