Putin met with the Moscow-installed governor of the Zaporizhzhia region in the Kremlin. Putin told Yevgeny Balitsky that the main focus was the security of the nuclear plant. The Russian President accused Ukraine of conducting strikes against the nuclear plant. Pertinent to note, the Zaporizhzhia plant is Europe’s largest nuclear power station. The Zaporizhzhia plant supplied 30% of Ukraine’s electricity prior to the onset of war. Zaporizhzhia is strategically important to Russia as it is only about 200km from Crimea. For Putin, annexed areas create a key corridor between Russia & the Crimean Peninsula. Crimea + Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson & Zaporizhzhia regions make up around 20% of Ukraine.
